The Historic Ezhamkulam Thookkam
Ezhamkulam Thookkam is one of the most famous rituals of the Ezhamkulam Devi Temple. This centuries-old tradition is regarded as a symbol of devotion and dedication. The ritual is performed in connection with the Bharani Festival during the Malayalam month of Kumbham, when devotees offer their vows and prayers to the Goddess as an act of thanksgiving and faith.
It is said that in earlier times, as many as twenty-one Thookkam ceremonies were conducted here. A well-known local saying, “If you climb a coconut tree in Kayamkulam, you can see the Thookkam at Ezhamkulam,” highlights the popularity and public attention that this ritual attracted.
Along with traditional practices such as Kalamezhuthu (ritual floor art), devotional songs, Kuthirayeduppu (ceremonial horse procession), and Aaluvilakku (traditional lamp ritual), the Thookkam ceremony remains an important element in preserving the cultural heritage and traditions of Ezhamkulam.
